International Women's Day - March 8, 2010

International Women’s Day – March 8 – is a day to recognize the remarkable contributions of women to families, communities and social progress, as well as the importance of promoting and protecting women’s rights.

HealthRight is working around the world to advance women’s health and rights – from building access to care to giving women the tools and information to transform their own communities.

This means women like Monica, a community health worker in Kenya’s remote North Rift Valley. The area where Monica comes from has long been marginalized within Kenyan society, and women face even greater challenges, especially when it comes to health. But women like Monica are now working as catalysts to improve the health of their communities. HealthRight is working closely with Monica and other community health workers in Kenya to bring life-saving health care and information for women and children. Monica and her colleagues have organized into a local committee, and with HealthRight’s support, they’ve become central in our efforts to build lasting access to maternal and newborn health care. “Through our work,” said Monica, “we’re making sure that mothers can give birth at the clinic, where they can have safe deliveries and follow up care for their children.”

This is just one story among thousands of women from across the globe who are working hand in hand with HealthRight to build lasting access to health for their communities today, and for years to come.
