THE HIDDEN CRISIS OF HIV AMONG STREET YOUTH Research and Rights-Based Approaches From Russia and Ukraine
Sunday, July 18th 3:45 – 5:45 pm
Street youth constitute a large portion of the global population at risk for HIV. Lack of access to basic health care and social services, exposure to drug use, sexual exploitation and other risk factors collectively fuel the high rates of HIV infection among street youth.
Russia and Ukraine have some of the fastest growing HIV epidemics in the world. A 2006 study conducted by HealthRight International and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control found that 37.4% of street youth in St. Petersburg, Russia were HIV-positive. Recent data from Ukraine indicate high rates of infection as well. Street youth represent a marginalized population with limited access to the HIV services, most of which are geared towards other at-risk populations, including prisoners, sex workers or injection drug users. Furthermore, street youth often face abuse from law enforcement, thwarting their trust in potentially life-saving health services.
HealthRight International utilizes a rights-based approach to design sustainable health interventions to curb the rising rates of HIV infection among street youth, and ensure that those living with HIV have access to comprehensive health and social services, including HIV prevention, treatment and care.
